Suby motors don't eat bearings as a rule. You can get 200K motors and the bearings are fine. They are crazy that way.
Yes, but they're trying to tell you when you pound the ---- out of an engine like that, you may want to give them a quick look over regardless.

Old man Blossfield went through 6-7 sets of pistons in his D16, reusing bearings, and got away with it. Don't ask me how, he'd melt down around the ring package - the rings he never filed - and then just toss another set of pistons in. They were some mighty egg shaped bores.

So.....close......

Been waiting on a clutch forever. First a buddy was going to be able to get me an ACT clutch kit at cost... Fell through. So I ordered a SPEC stage 4 with 4 puck.

Final build list....

Phase 1 2.5 open deck block with pinned cylinders
Phase 1 2.2 crank
Phase 2 connecting rods
STI pistons
ACL bearings
3 ply metal headgaskets (branded Subaru)
2.5 phase 1 heads mild port and polish - unknown what they are from, but they came with oil outs but no oil in (?)

Estimated compression is 7.2-1

Twin turbo intake manifold
1990 2.2 throttle body
820 cc modded STI 550 sidefeed injectors
3-1 Vortech rrfpr

2.5" intercooler piping
Modded large bore JECS MAF.
Big *** Intercooler

Borla NA header
Custom uppipe and downpipe
2.5 exhaust for now

T3/T4 Garret/Precision turbo (GT30r equivilent)
Eaton M62 supercharger
Greddy "Trust" Manual boost controller

PerfectPower6 piggyback

Devils Own meth injection kit with progressive setup

3 bar MAP

Perfection brand flywheel (new)
Spec stage 4 clutch with 4 puck (if it shows up in time)

And probably some other crap....

Waiting for the clutch

Here I am tapping the 2.5 heads for the oil return. The area I am drilling and tapping is the same exact place turbo heads are tapped.

What is odd about these heads, is that the oil OUT appears to me to be factory.....

I am "getting" the clutch tommorrow via UPS. It must be installed, the motor installed, broken in, tuned and then shoot for high 11's on Saturday. Doable, just not sane.

Saturday is the big Subiefest II. My goal is an ego quest of beating the crap out of $30-$50k STIs..... I don't car if the motor makes it or not, I have spares, just as long as I get some good runs in.

Actually I car, thats why I am going to tune it. hahaha

No ---- what a job! Hey I really think you can have a full T4 turbo in there instead of a T3/T4. Would kick in a lil later but with so much more topend. Your whole engine setup is more than generous, it's made for big flow stuff.

Also—I don't know about Subby's cams but 7.2:1 is way low man. I once did that with an engine (1.6 honda) and it was so dead below 4000.

And... yes you will kick many an STI's ***!!!

It started.

It ran

It makes so much noise.

And leaks oil EVERYWHERE!

I didnt goop the ****ing valve covers like an idiot. And it leaks everywhere.

And it smokes to high heaven

and I am a tad depressed.

In the amount of time it takes to fix the valve covers, I probably could switch motors with the good 2.2......

Argggggggg.

-----------

The smoking is a few things.

Oil burning off the up and down pipe which is oil soaked heat wrapp.

Oil burning off the exhaust manifold

But then I have smoke coming out of the valve cover breathers.... But its fairly dark in the shop by now, so I don't know what the smoke looks like. It does smell alot like fuel.

The noise could be lifters..... Or it could be rod knock.... It has new bearings, but I didnt use plastigage...... The bearing journals were perfectly clean, both rod and crank.....

-----------

Part of me wants to yank and swap the motor. The other half wants to give it a little longer.... but I have no time.... crap.

------------

OK, of course I couldnt just leave it.

I went back to the wagon and started double checking stuff. 2 vacumn lines were off. Had forgot to put the alternator wiring back on (took me something like 20 minutes to find it, haha, I had tucked it into the damn wheelwell!). And then put water in the radiator....

Suddenly I noticed no more noise!

No more air puffing out the damn valve cover breathers...

Still ALOT of oil pouring out the valve covers!

So..... I think I have a 89% chance of this thing working. But have to spend tommorrow morning pulling the damn valve covers off and resealing them. Goop, here I come!

Tired, sore and kinda positive.

Yeah, it will be at Subiefest. It may not be racing though.....

Got 42 miles on the block, running 16 psi.

Ok, latest lowdown.....

Valve cover gaskets WORKED!!! No more oil leak out of the valve covers....

But.....still have 2-3 leaks. Driver side head leaks SOMEWHERE out of the front. I "think" its a bolt with bad washer, so I replaced it with teflon tape and newer brass bango bolt washer...I will see if this works tommorrow. The other 1 or 2 leaks are coming out the rear of the passenger side head. Is it the turbo drain line? Is it the rear main? Is it something else? God only knows at this point. But its a pretty bad leak. Especially since it seems to be getting blown all over the damn exhaust and smoking to high heaven. In fact it smokes so bad I can't tell if I am getting blowby while on boost. Sometimes it smokes, sometimes it doesnt. crap....

Smoking heavily all the time, but this is not out the exhaust. Good and bad. Good is that I seem to have a "sealed" motor to some point. Bad is that it embarrassing to drive. If I can find the damn leak and actually fix it, I think I may have a decent motor. If the leak is out of the rear main, or either of the two rear axis points to the rods, then I am screwed. Both those points of course are newly sealed, but that doesn mean bad luck can't rear its head.

Normal driving around town I have pretty damn good idle and AFRs, amazing for the fact I am running 820 cc injectors in place of 270s, even if I am running a much maligned piggyback!

Compression of this motor has been calculated by myself and various others from a low of 6.8 to a high of 7.2.... While it is doggy, the 2.5 makes up for it a little bit for driving around town and therefore it feels kind of like a regular 2.2. Not great, but not slow. Pretty good torque. As for actual HP, well, it will be decent I think, but I need to tune it first.

If Marnix is right, and I have the early Phase 0 EJ20D with rockers but reasonably hot cams, soooooo, I should do alright when I tune it tommorrow at PRE on their dyno. Bobby was good enough to "bump" someone for me to get in.

So..... It lives for now.... And I will tune it for max power without the meth injection (no time to get it hooked up 100% at this point), but with 100 octane and low compression, I should still be good for 330-350 whp.... We shall see!

Dynoed 22-23 psi at 60 mile breakin....

311 hp and 355 torque on a Dyno Dynamic dyno.

Clutch problems......but still holds most of the time.

The bigger displacement takes higher in the rpm band to spool, but then spools ALOT faster.

I need to find my camera..
