ok had to chime in on this.. if you do a long pull wide open in 5th you can melt your pistons, valves, and even crack you head..

reason is because you are inducing constant heat and not letting up, even with a well tuned motor, you will run into problems with overheating..

so how can i run all day long in 5th gear and not ---- up my motor?

here you go
- sleeve your block
- get everything forged pistons and s.s. valves
- get everything heatcoated something like swaintech's goldline
- get your headcoated as well, i have personally seen 3 cracked honda heads from people running autocross and multiple runs at the dragstrip
- get an oil cooler, bigger radiator, and run a mixture of redline water wetter, with your coolant mix
- running aquamist setup will also help and n20 intercooler spray if you just want everything

i know this sounds like a lot of ---- but if you do it once your motor will never give out on you..

my buddy had his pistons, stock valves and head coated buy swaintech..
he was running 15 lbs of boost with JRSC on d16z6 stock sleeves, and 150 shot on nitrous

will at the track he bends 3 valves, so when we go to pull the head everything is fine except the valves.
after 5000 miles the pistons looked just like they did when he got them back from swaintech.
now he is running 20 lbs of boost with s.s. valves and revhard turbo kit and still hits 150 shot..

note this is with a dual stage boost controller, dual stage nitrous kit 50 shot then 150shot, and AEM engine management.

ive done solid 5th gear pulls at 10psi before on my stock a6. never had an issue. speedo goes to 125 in my rex and the needle was pointed almost straight down. my guess was 140+mph, kinda scary. the only thing that went wrong is the internals of my dizzy started making a shitload of noise and it sounded lke valves ticking, lol.

car still runs like a champ...not that id do it again though.

hmm i learned something new today. would this apply to b16 tranny where 70mph in 5th=4000 rpms?

So would anything below 8 pounds on a stock engine be legit? Im running 7 psi,,,is it bad to drive it out in 5th with that.

Yea see I do the same thing on mine. I've done a bunch of runs with friends that started at 80 and worked to about 140, is that detrimental to the motor? I got into it with my buddy's z28 wit gears and other crap one day and had my needle about str8 down, had not problems with the car. Let it cool of normally and that was it everythign was fine?
I guess i'm not quite understanding whats so damaging? Is it if people try to do pulls from like 4k to redline or what? Cus otherwise if you're just beatin it to the limiter through the rest of the gears i dont see why its so damaging to continue that beating into 5th? I'm lost.

basically to get to the top end of the rev limiter in your car, u have to make the engine work harder in 5th gear.
unlike 4th gear, which is near 1:1, 5th gear is a diffrent ratio.

The longer the car is in gear, more stress. bla bla .. more heat .. bla bla bla .. engine is under more load bla bla ...

I am sure Random will chime in here and tell us all about load again.
