Well, to whom it may concern, I was wrong on the garrett VGT turbo. The compressor housing IS clockable. there are 4 bolts under the compressor wheel that hold the housing to the CHRA. So, it IS clockable in 90 degree increments. Sorry for the bad info.

Is there an effective means of monitoring turbine/compressor speed? If so, I would think that you could rig your controller for controlling the vnt based on boost pressure and turbo speed. A simple x,y, table that outputs control to the vanes based on how far off of target boost you were. It would definatly take some PID control work but may be doable. That is assuming you can monitor your speed somehow. Am I way off base?

There is a turbine speed sensor built into these turbos. I'm not sure whether it is a VR or Hall sensor, or where to get something that will read to ~130krpm.


Unfortunately the problem is not figuring out a control strategy, its talking to the stock actuator to actually move the VGT rack. That is what people are working on now. Proprietary stuff is never fun to figure out.

There is no speed sensor on the Garrett VGT that I am working with. Its going on tomorrow. I'm going to try the MS boost controller. I'll try to keep current here on the progress.

I got it off e-bay, the slider vane was very gunked up and sticking, as is probably to be expected with all of the used ones that are/have/will be up for sale. Anyways, here's some pics, I looked like a damn chimney sweep afterwards, the inner and outer rings were locked up and sooted to ---- even all inside the land of the inner one. It was so caked i,n I wetsanded most parts with 320 and brake cleaner, used alot of brakecleaner, and a toothbrush in some parts. I was trying not just to be as careful as I could, but I was also still hoping/assuming I would be able to reassemble the actuator lever without tearing into the chra, otherwise I would have used a fine & soft brass wirebrush mounted in a dremel for alot of the housing side or even my bead blaster. Anyways, I got it all clean and functioning smooth but was unable to assemble it without taking the chra apart.

Well lesson learned on the shaft, I called the local holset dealer to inqure about a rebuild kit now that I was in there, and he looked into it and called me back saying that it was to new and he couldn't get any parts for it, don't know if it's bullshit but I might as well try dodge at least for the shaft just for ***** and giggles but I bet it's through the roof.

If anybody want's/needs more info or any measurements off these wheels let me know. Also, Aero, let me dig up the pics from the limited repair info from Holset, that stupid 10 page pdf. You may have seen it, but some of the larger holset vgt's like the 551 use a manual diaphgram, but it looks more advanced/complex, I'm thinking that might be another option for us as well.



















Wish I would have seen thsi sooner but I stay busy and have a bunch of projects in front of me before I can ever think about working on my own car.


All isn't lost with twisting the shaft off.

Two options

1 go to a local machine shop and cut the height of the compressor wheel down enough that you can get a new nut on. I did this with a large Garrett wheel I put in a 14b housing years ago. Damn that little thing spooled fast.

2. Find a turbo shop and carry every thing in and see if they can match up a turbine wheel and shaft.

You can contact Jeff at turbo auto in Nashville TN its on Charlotte avenue. He may be able to help. I think if you go to city search nasville you can get his number. I told him about me thinking about getting one and he said go for it.

Thing is even if you get the compressor wheel cut the shaft may have a bend or twist Jeff can tell you if it is and he also balances units.

Dependent on how this works I've already thought about getting a extended tip Schwitzer wheel and machining out a 431 housing that doesn't have the stupid bend elbow on the housing. Its only stupid because its facing 180 degrees from what I need.

You don't snap off the shaft on something relatively massive that's torqued in inch-pounds. You snap off the shaft when you don't realise it's a left handed thread and tighten it when you try to loosen it.
