I caught a glimpse under the hood of a newer Chevy diesel and it appears that they have almost the exact same turbo that Ford uses in the 6.0L. The actuator looks identical, and it would appear the Chevy has a vane position sensor as well. Any chevy diesel guys on here want to give some input?

Anyways, a controller based on a MAP signal would be ****. A gauge-mode MAP would have it open at idle, closed at 0psi, and opbviously open with boost. I'd guess there are PWM controllers that base it off an input voltage, rather than resistance like the basic setups I've seen.
The controller (my controller) would incorporate a feedback control system based on inputs of turbine RPM, MAP, throttle position, and EGT (critical to control on a gas engine; we don't want to melt exhaust valves by having too much exhaust restriction).
It looks like we will be putting together a test bed with a junkyard engine and running it on a dyno to map out the turbocharger performance (RPM vs inlet pressure vs variable vane position) so we have some data for the control system.

Yeah he goes by "fieromadman" on the forums I'm on. He has a build thread for his turbo setup on realfierotech.com but it isn't done yet. His car does pretty well for NA. I think he'll have to mess with cam timing to get them to work well with boost. It idles like it has a ton of overlap which might lose him some power under boost.
No DOHC was ever put in an Impala.. the motor came in W-body cars only.. the Grand Prix, Cutlass Supreme, Lumina, and Monte Carlo.

You may also consider EBP(Exhaust BackPressure) as animportant measurement.

Hey aero just sent you an email. Best of luck with the build, I'm seriously considering this for my VR4

Maybe as a diagnostic, but it's not very useful because of its predictable nature... Exhaust backpressure is a constant function of vane position, MAP, and throttle position.. it doesn't really need to be directly measured. I could add it as a diagnostic tool but I think the turbine RPM and EGT are the better measurements to use.
We're also not trying to control it as part of the feedback system.
The vane position will be varied to control boost levels based on throttle position. If the EGT gets too high the vanes will be opened further. If the turbine RPMs get too high the vanes will be opened further. If the boost gets too high the vanes will be opened further. Exhaust backpressure will be up when the vanes are closed but as long as EGTs are in check, it's not a problem.

Good points.

From AllData, here is what I got for the 'electronic turbo actuator':

Pin 1: smart power relay feed. battery positive or maybe 12 regulated

Pin 2: actuator ground

Pin 3: high data link

Pin 4: low data link

hope that helps

Haha well I can't guarantee anything. But I ------- love mine.

Here are the flange dimensions since they aren't standard for anyone thinking about picking one up.

I'm probably going to weld the vgt still so it won't be too special.
