that cylinder didn't run lean did it? oil would lower the octane of your fuel and cause detonation, but I have never seen detonation or pre-ignition blow a hole in the side of piston, thats fucked up! Running lean in that cylinder would def do it though, melt it faster than butter.
Lots of the vitaras are making 400+hp though, so go for it with the next try

Before CP 'redesigned' their pistons (removed material around the intake valve relief like ALL other companies :1), the claim was that oil was the culprit that was melting pistons left and right. Basicly you add a smidgeon of oil, which artifially lowers the octane & burns hotter, and POOF! your piston melts. Never because it was a risky tune, because you ran too much boost for the pistons, etc. Always due to oil [AND a shitty design, IMO].
So... replace a poorly designed forged piston (CP) with a cheaper high-strength cast piston (Vitara), splash some oil on it, and you get thermonuclear meltdown.
Anyways, is this the first melted vitara piston? I'm actually surprised the ringlands didn't crack first. This goes to show how tough they really are, I guess.

I have yet to see a vitara that has cracked apart actually. Saw one or two melt down due to idiocy. But most end up spinning a bearing, or throwing a rod entirely.

they looked good to me... no metal specks anywhere on the plug, but it was hard to tell on the cylinder #3 because the plug was so soaked with oil.
you mean weld it all the way around each sleeve or just tack weld it in place? i tacked mine in place and 2 of the tack welds broke.

Tack welds are usually too cold to be structural, most I've seen that don't break make about a 1" weld, and do it in 4-8 places. One guy I know has had a B20/V setup that's been at 265-275whp for the past 3 race seasons, and his stock B20 sleeves have held fine with a block guard welded in 6 spots with 1" welds.
