Another MR2 Noob here. We work on them for a living *sigh*.
I'll try to get some nice posts up about each of our own projects for you, including another 4A-G(T)E.

Toysrme is 50% correct about the weaknesses of A-Series blocks. Most don't hold up too well in stock form, but this is predominantly correct on the earlier 3 Rib blocks that came in the 85/86 models; MR2 and Corolla GTS. The 3 rib block has been proven to have more problems with the notoriously low oil pressure that Toyota is well known for. This problem was partially remedied with the 7 rib blocks.

The 4A-GZE is not hardly what I would call significantly better platform. The MR2 4A-GZE did not have oil jets, knock sensors, nor a block that proves any different from the standard 4A-GE aside from bore. The rods are NOMINALLY stronger, and the pistons are semi-forged/hyper eutectic.

If I were to choose the optimal platform to start with I would go with the late 4A-GZE from a Levin (AE111 - MAP based, Coil on plug ignition, etc.) or a small-port redtop 4A-GE from AE92 Corolla GTS or Geo Prizm GSi, which is EXACTLY what we did, powered by Megasquirt FTW!
Currently adding pics to host.. I'll post my own thread of it, but I want to say to 86meesta2 that I very much enjoyed seeing your project, and keep up the HomeMade-style masterminding
