Are the emissions requirements hurting MPG in new engines? It seems like the older civics got better MPG than the newer ones.. I guess it could be weight. I donno.

I think emissions somewhat hurt MPG, because I think it tends to make the exhaust a little more restrictive. There are technologies like lean-burn, direct injection, and other crap that I think improves the mileage.

The biggest factor I think is probably weight. More and more safety requirements, and people always wanting BIGGER and more power decreases the mileage you'll get. The Hondas we usually ---- with came factory with mostly 1.5-1.6l engines and weighed hardly anything. Now I don't think Honda offers a car with less than 1.8l, except the fit, and safety requirements have forced the weight to increase.

I agree.

What about the free market? If I choose to buy an unsafe, 2000lb car with minimal options, I should be able to...get a new crx. Unfortunately they wouldn't sell too well...

It amazes me how motorcycles can get away with next to 0 safety and much more lax emissions...yet if I want to buy a car I have to buy a pigslut vehicle with power this and that, *** warmers, and airbags...pshh!

Time for some progress shots, kids.

Got the head back from the machinist earlier in the week. Fresh valve stem seals, new seats, cleaned, milled, pressure tested.

Wes built the ZC/Si hybrid gearbox for me tonight, installed the sweet .702 5th gear Bense laid on me.

Picked up a 7.5 lb Fidanza flywheel and OE/Diakin clutch w/ 3K miles for $75 from Johnny, crazy local guy who campaigned a flat 9 second HX swapped EH hatch. Very minor heat spotting of the friction surfaces because he gave it hell, but it'll be just fine in beater duty.
