Wrong.

Engine thaws while radiator/hoses stay frozen, you get no circulation.

I didn't even think about that, but it does make sense.

The car was already warming to running temperature and AT running temperature probably ATLEAST 5 mins before the smoking.

the block may not have been frozen thick with ice just merley enough to stop flow, but running the engine at operating temperature started the dethawing process and you driving it only led to ineveitiable.... think of a coke bottle you left in the freezer all night its frozen fairly thick but you let it thaw out a little bit and then you open the top SWOOOOOOOSH this massive explosion of soda is now all over the place because of excess pressure now think of the same reaction inside your engine as it dethaws after being frozen... just wanted to put in a slightly simpler form.. this could be what happened and it may not be but as you said earlier with how cold it was this to me is the most logical cause....just hope you get it sorted out....

Yeah, neither did I until the end of November when being a lazy ---- and running straight water caught up with me. Have you ever cranked a car with a (semi?) frozen water pump and heard the horrible noise the pump makes as it does a crushed ice machine impression? Then everything seems fine... until the overheating starts and you discover the radiator hoses are ice and the engine is hot. Asshat! lost his 'B7 that same day from freezing and splitting the block, only difference is I got up 5:30 AM to have breakfast before school, while his was freezing solid.

I now have 10-15% antifreeze, and my heater core lines freeze up sometimes so that heat takes a minute longer than it should to flow, but the engine thaws radiator/hoses before it becomes an issue. :)
