Re:ZC worth putting in 96 civic
my advice...keep the y8....trust me you won't regret that....if u want ur y8 to pull harder at low end then go with a y7 block, in other words, swap your y8 block for a non-vtec d series block. go with a d16y7(DX) block. (mini-me). this will give u performance at low end. performance wise, it's purtie good for a single cam motor.

To the original poster, are you talking about a DOHC or a SOHC? Not that my answer would change, but now I'm curious.

Re:ZC worth putting in 96 civic
If you were to put a DOHC 2g blacktop ZC (the most common zc) in your obd2 civic, you would need to run the y8 oil pump and y8 pan, since the crank sensor is located on the oil pump itself, and because the pump is different you have to use the newer style pan. Tap some threads in the block somewhere for a knock sensor, Re-route the wires for the coolant temp sensor, Make a custom mount for the distributor, use a external map sensor (88-91) Run obd1/2 injectors. And after all that.. what ecu are you going to even use, lol.. There was never a obd2 PG7 ecu, the only thing that would come close would be a PR4 OBD2, and you would still have to run 2 o2 sensors..
Old engine + OBD2 = bad
