my friend has a g2 RS (GS conversion) and runs fine even racing his car.

your problem sounds possibly like a HG.

You check the radiator? My car was having the same problem and replaced the t-stat and double checked everything. It ended up i had a small leak where a rock slammed into my radiator and was still in but leaking. It was a bitch to find cause the anti-freeze would evaporate from the heat until the rock came out :P. Needless to say i replaced the radiator with a nice aluminum one and no more problems .

Mine was backing up into the overflow and then the overflow was leaking... Replaced the t-stat, rad. cap and neither one worked. Replaced the water pump and I've been cool ever since, ha ha...
