Default Educate me: Common failure points (EF Generation)

I have a 90 Civic LX 4door.

Basically I am trying to track down some of the common first places to look sorta stuff.

Problems:
1. Rear Window won't roll down (power)
2. No cluster lights
3. No power to cruise button (doesn't light up)
4. Clock is dead

Obviously, I've checked fuses, just looking to see if people know of any of those "oh that thing always breaks at point X, I've seen it a hundred times" sorta things.

This is the first older gen honda I've owned. Everything else has been 95+

the only one I've been in had power everything, I was impressed. needless to say the only thing that didnt work right was the passengers side power seatbelt. seemed totally random. man those things were decked out.

have you checked if power gets to the motor or if the motor works

check if the dimmer switch still works

and i guess same thing with the cruise

if there is no power work your way back to the switch and then to the fuse box

1.) if fuse isnt burnt, the motor is dead.. i had to change both passsenger sides on my last 4dr.
2.) " " " ", it is a 17 year old car. the 2 top overhead lights are prolly dead. they sit overtop the cluster to light the outer, big sockets in back for internal lighting. (if your cluster dont light up because the fuse your rear lights dont work either, if i remember right this fuse is underhood.. sorry if im wrong its been a while.)
3.) cruise control light doesnt light up then the unit is functioning improperly.
4.) clock runs off same fuse as the radio.,, check that one... if not the wires run through the dash sometimes the gromit breaks apart and cuts the wire right there..

Kick the door really hard, that should shake the motors up enough to get them working.

Smack the dash as hard as you can, eventually the element will make contact and the flow of electricity running through it will make it hold that contact until electrons are no longer going through the filament.

you need break fluid. add 2 table spoons and smack dash repeatedly.

Well, today on a whim, I decided to hit a junkyard, and by dumb *** luck found a new cluster and bezel. Just happened to have only about 300 miles more than mine.

When I pulled mine out, I found a weird ground wire tied into one of the screws right next to the speedo cable hole. If you follow the traces on the board, it leads to the outmost wire at the big plug. Right where it plugs in it was all black and charred. Go figure.

So I tossed the new cluster in, and the cruise control switch from the new bezel.

Everything seems to work normal again, cruise works, no CEL's anymore, but still no instrument backlighting. I tried the other dimmer switch, no luck there. I hit the plug with a test light, no power at the plug on the dimmer switch, but I can't remember if I had the light switch on, haha.

Least I fixed alot of the little issues easily.
