Default Timing - Educate Me. Am I Running To Much? To Little?

This is in a d16a6 motor with vitara pistons and a fully built head. The head was decked .040" so the timing on the cam gear is advanced 3*

We hit the car with a timing gun at the HMT meet and it was dead on, but Ive since changed map sensors, tunes etc

Heres a pic of the current map Im running, I onyl know how to play with fuel and ive gotten it down pretty much perfect for all regions.

I just have no knowledge on what to look for in timing. I definetely cant hear pinging with my open downpipe and dump, nor would I know what I was hearing

Heres my map - click to enlarge I think

not too much, definitely needs some smoothing out though. see how your boost columns in the upper R's go from like 15* to 21* then to 14*....thats screwy... smooth those out so its just like the same from 3500-redline or use a gradual change...dont need to have it bouncing all over like that.

Yeah Im looking at it and I really dont get it

Im running 91 octane if it matters, I just dont wanna pop anything because of a few fucked cells

But I wanna get all I can out of this motor short of paying someone to tune it for me

I love learning

Here is a look at the bin with a smoother timing map.

Notice that in the columns I use a pretty basic and steady timing # I could've left them all at the oddball decimals all over the place but this won't make much difference and its alot easier to look at.

you'll also notice that to the left I set your idle columns and rows to a flat 16 (16.2 is closest TE allows) degrees, make sure your base timing at the distributor is set to match.

You can try to run this map, just beware that some of the areas had a pretty good change in timing values so you might have to adjust fuel to compensate. Shouldn't be too extreme though. Its sitting at 15.5 degrees at 15psi, with your compression that should be alright for a base.

Check your email.

yeah a base, as in run it like that unless you wanna tune timing for power, which i doubt you ever will.

basically that is set up so that you are running 15 degrees timing advance at 15psi of boost in the upper rpms. Its just the number of degrees the spark plugs fire before the cylinder reached top dead center. advance is good for making power but if you over-do it, you're gonna end up having detonation issues and break stuff and blow headgaskets and so on.

Kevin, habe you gotten the car to idle yet? Timing is probably your biggest hit. Sorry I have'nt had time to play with your base yet. Are you still running Tune 3 that we got down in boost? Or have you started from scratch? The one thing is, Tune 3 is a NG55 code. I don't think the newest vesrion of TE has a NG60 3bar map yet.

As I said: Covert to Crome!!!!
