been thinking bout just resurfacing the head and going with an oem headgasket.. swapping in an ls tranny and selling the car..
might go through the hassle of swapping out the suspension upgrades and what not.. well see.. this all depends on how the removal and resurfacing of the head goes.. heh

if i havent overheated the engine when a headgasket blows i just take a straightedge on the head and look for light. if you can see light through the straight edge than the head is warped. i know taking it to a machinist will be exact measurements but i cant imagine doing that everytime you do a headgasket. unless the same car keeps blowing headgaskets.

I'd do a compression test again if you have oily sparkplugs. Sounds like you might have lost some ringlands. I guess a headgasket would be possible though, but I think you would have other problems such as overheating, loss of coolant, etc. But I dunno
