Just make sure when you take the heatsinks off to replace the thermal compound with something non shitty.

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death

well i got it to work. it was code 0020
i did the towel deal, although i'm not sure if it actually did anything, because i turned it off then back on and it was still red. so i said ---- it, and went to watch some TV, came back 25 min later and tried again. worked, so i booted up guitar hero3 and spent 20 min downloading a track pack and played for about 40 min with no probs.
i was afraid to shut it off tho. so after i did i booted it up again just to see, and it started up fine, so, so far so good.

i guess the 0020 is an unknown code, but some think it is overheating, but it couldn't ave been because mine had not been on in days.

most of the information you find is based on that page, which is EXTREMELY old.
0020 is overheating of the GPU core.

Doing the towel trick is the worst thing you could have possibly done to it. If you don't have a warranty, you seriously need to open the case, clean everything and apply a real thermal paste to both heatsinks. Upgrading the fans is nice, Adding a case side fan nicer, but beware of the power draws.

its only a year old, so it still has the warranty. but you say the 0020 is overheating of the gpu, but it did it right when i turned it on, and hadn't played it for 3 days. when i went back out to play again i had the 3 lights >:(, so i decided to watch some macgyver episodes, but whe i turned the tv to the dvd player input, there was no signal. the night before i had been messing with the tv, turning it around and ------ around with the antenna to get LOST ota hd. so i unplugged all the connectors for the dvd player and the xbox and reconnected them, the dvd player then showed up, and when i tested the xbox it worked too.
could a bad connection been the problem from the beggining?

You just spend $50 to repair your xbox, which will then have the problem come back. It may takes weeks or months, but it will come back.

You could have just gotten a new xbox for free and not had to wait for anything.

dude, its ------- walmart

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death

Alot of them will take the faceplate off and check for the silver sticker now b/c they'll have a geek from electronics come back there.
About two months ago I returned a headset to get $40 and the guy tried to be a dick asking, "what's this orange stuff all over the earpiece" to which I asked what? you've never had a girlfriend? you don't know what makeup is???

The majority of eb games & places like that will check the warranty sticker and check the date / serial number on the back of the unit.
Too avoid the problem, go back to the walmart once the night shift has started 9-10pm, and have a lame story to tell them like XXX is going to iraq and we got this for him and it just quit working sob sob sob. It took me two tries at two walmarts to get them to swap a dead 360 without a reciept till I brought that ---- out. And try to have everything else in the original plastic bags taped or stapled together.

If you have a reciept and it's within afew months old it's not that bad. Just don't even say anything about it beyond its broken. They'll more than likely give you your money back without much fuss as soon as they can get someone to make sure all the parts are in the box.
Now if you don't have a reciept... They'll most likely let you swap it, and its becoming rarer they'll give you the money on a walmart gift card, but they do that with things like headsets pretty often.
