Xbox 360 ring of death
My friend's 360 got the ring of death yesterday and he can't send it into microsoft because it's been "tampered with". Does anyone know what causes this or any solutions?

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
from what im understanding is that the 360 is a computer...and like computers...they crash. and im told thats what it is. he should have realized that just like anything. tampering with a product will void warrenty....congrats. he has a big plastic paper weight

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
dont you wrap them in towels and let them overheat so they reset the motherboard or some ----?

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
take it outside . plug in a socket. drop in bucket full of water. should make it reset.

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
this is just what i was told in training for a job last year...never really got to play with one other than one night. but the temporary part of it basically means you can send it off and they can fix it. ive seen pics of shelves where they plug them up to servers or some ---- and basically whip the harddrive clean and start over.

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
get a PS3

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
i had the ring of death last week sent mine in. they tell you to keep your hard drive thats not the problem.

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
It's due to the X-clamps that hold the cooling fins on the main processor and graphics chip bending the board and cracking solder joints over time. This has been fixed with recent units that use screws instead of the shitty X-clamps. They have also added an additional heat pipe and cooling fins for better cooling capacity.

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
buy a new xbox 360, swap out the innerds, and return the newshell/broken innerds one.

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
It moher ------- depends. Why don't you tell us the error code<s> and we'll tell you what it means. What I would do is go buy another one from walmart, put his dead one in the box and return it to get your money back. Do not open or mod a 360 that's in warranty. That's ridiculously ------- stupid, your friend sucks at brain.

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
How many red lights are on? I believe all 4 means your video cable on the back is loose and three (minus the top left one) is the 'your xbox is broken' error.
Wrapping it up in a bunch of towels and sweatshirts and leaving it running for 45 minutes to 1 hour does work. A friend did it at my house and we were playing Bioshock after we let it cool down. Also check the video connection on the back of the xbox. |
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
letting something overheat isnt a smart thing to do.
why odnt people fucken mod xbox360's with better ---- en heat sinks? |

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
The reason that overheating works is because you are actually re-melting the solder joints that have cracked. It is only a temporary fix and the problem will come back.
The reason people open their xboxes that are still under warranty is to mod them to play burned games. Although you do run the risk of getting caught if you play on Live, most people haven't gotten caught as long as they are using the latest iXtreme firmware which has checks built in to prevent detection. |
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
the overheating causes the board to warp. then, the 60 or so solder points under the processor and ram chipsets crack. this can be fixed usually. you can try to buy the washer and screw fix which holds the processor firmly to the board so it cant crack the solder. other than that, there are tons of 360 repair people on ebay that can do it for about 60 bucks. i sent mine to a guy that actually desolders the processor with a machineand redoes it with a heat sink....hes the only one i would trust
you can also buy a warranty sticker on ebay |

any person with any grain of salt to their soldering skills can do this. which brings me to my original question. instead of having to do a hack job on the sexbox, why not just slap a bigger ---- en heat sink on it? or better yet, just mount a fan on it. |
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
It already has 2 decent sized fans on it. You can't really add another heatsink that will work efficiently. The dvd drive sits right on top of the heatsink which doesn't help. Microsoft added another one including an additional integrated heat pipe to the newel models though.

those fuckers still get kinda hot though. |
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
And mine still sounds like jet taking off. Easy solution is turn up the surround sound O0

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
the new ones run a smaller chipset that runs a lot cooler. search for xbox 360 falcon chip. they also redesign the heatsinks
|
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
That's only in the Halo 3 edition. You've also repeated everything I've said in your posts. The heatsinks weren't redesigned at all, they just added one.
This is a pic of the new heatsink/pipe they added a few months ago http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/1118/360vh7.jpg |
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
I got one of th Halo 3 editions because they were out of all other. Are they any better?
|
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
definitely re-designed. yea, i said mostly what you did, but i gave some more detail. i have to find the site that actually tore them apart

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
Nice article

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
You guys got me curious so I went and took my Halo 3 one apart. Nope no "Falcon" chip. :3 Found this:
http://forums.xbox.com/15804553/ShowPost.aspx Mine was made on 8/7/07 and it says the ones produced on 8/24/07 and later have the new chips. |

if you are going to buy an external fan, dont buy one that latches onto the 360 because it voids your warrenty. Buy the one that the 360 sits on. its like $20-$40 |
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
yea, pretty sure my fan got mine to hit the awesome red ring after a week...woot!!!!
|
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
those fans are super bullshit.
also those heat sinks on them are super bullshit as well. imma sell a water cooling kit for those hard core losers. |

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
do they check it, if you send it in for a Ring o' death? or just take your word for it and replace the ---- anyway? i got mine last x-mas, and no problems so far, but i would like to get the new ---- before my warrenty runs out.
|
Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
Yes, of course they check it. Your warranty is 3 years so I think you'll be fine.

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
Same thing happened to me, I just had to cut some plastic off the back of my case. I had no idea that the cheapest 360's (Arcade) now come with HDMI, neat. I don't use it but it's nice to know it's there I guess ???

Re: Xbox 360 ring of death
I'm sure plenty of people use HDMI on the 360, but I already have it connected through component video/optical audio and don't have any free HDMI ports on my tv. It would look/sound exactly the same anyways.
