The fact that the local import autoarecker keeps VW door handles in a box by the counter about sums it up :3 But you get to tell everyone you have a German engineered vehicle ::)

those door handles are most likely from mk1 & 2 cars. so a 15 year old car needs a handle big deal. they are like $25 new at the dealer

those are the same handles that came on a good amount of porsches in the mid/late 80's. they are worth a pretty penny. a new one from the dealer was $120-150

I was ------- a girl with a '00 TDI wagon two years ago, she was on her second driver's and I broke her first passenger's.

I had an ex-roomate with a new off the showroom floor Cabrio he was Dukes of Hazarding in and out of because the crazy ass half Irish half sandnig bastard was too lazy to drop it off at the dealer. Same thing happened to the Passat that replaced it the following year.

Should I list off the other ten or fifteen people I know personally with new VWs that have handle problems?

So far, in a years time, my shitty 95 jetta has had the following problems:
1) both pass and drivers door locks broke, so I couldn't get in on a 10 degree windy-ass winter night when drunk
2) the pvc breather hose is plastic, and it split down the seam covering my engine compartment with oil.
3) spark plug changing sucks
4) all 4 springs broke, and struts blew up as well
5) electrical nighmares, just too many to list
6) vacuum locks are total ----, won't go down by themselves
7) clutch blew up without warning.
8) axles spew grease like no tomorrow
9) speedo only works sometimes
German engineering is a joke. I will never buy one again. I have replaced more on this car in a year than I have replaced on all of my hondas combined (5 in all).

4) all 4 springs broke, and struts blew up as well i find that really hard to believe, springs just dont break, especialy all 4 at once

7) clutch blew up without warning. when a clutch actually breaks(not wears out) you dont get a warning, thats why my civic is sitting in the driveway

8) axles spew grease like no tomorrow i bet you need new boots, pretty comon on most FWD cars that are aging

the other things you mentioned are comon VW problems, do research before you buy a car. blame yourself for being lazy not the car. all european cars need more up-keep then any car on planet, especialy one that is 15 years old

Yes they are the door handles from 80's to early/mid 90's VW's.It is a sign of poor engineering along with poor quality material used which is a common problem in VW's.I was a apprentice mechanic in Whistler a ski resort/town where VW's were very popular among locals and i spent more then my fair share of time fixing stupid ---- on VW's that shouldnt break in the first place.Mechanical parts wearing out is to be expected but the amount of parts/system components in one of those cars that could have simply been designed better is just sad :3 I really like old Rabbit GTI's though and would almost build one of those up as there is way less to break on the older ones.

I would'nt say that is poor design, i think its poor materials in the very complex design. anyone ever tried to replace a handle in one? i have in a 86'944 turbo, what a bitch. the problem was shitty pot metal that broke.
