Not trying to be a dick, just being realistic.

Spend 2-3 years spinning wrenches for a living. Avoid quick lube loser jobs, avoid dealershit oil change/mop boy jobs. Go directly to a successful small or medium sized independent fix and repair shop and proceed to get buried in grease while you hump transmissions and change starters and ask the guy who diagnoses everything to explain everything he looked for/observed/looked at first when he fixes a car.
When that guy gets good an annoyed with you leave him alone for three days, then buy him lunch. It's imperative you stay on his good side as he's the only thing that's going to make or break you as a mechanic in a short period of time, and he's your only hope at ever getting your head out of your *** without a lot longer than 2-3 years spinning wrenches.
After that 2-3 years, sit yourself down and ask if you really want to do this ---- for a living. Most likely you're going to decide the answer is no... you still love cars, but you only want to wrench on them as a hobby. If you decide yes, well, you're ------- crazy but you'll probably do a good job.

Re: How do you nogs make money
I spent 3.5 years doing just that, and I got the accelerated class. Experienced mechanic dude stood over me screaming for eight hours a day to move faster, hurry up, faster, what are you waiting for?, WHOA WAIT A GODDAMN SECOND DON'T YOU EVER STOP AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE DOING!? I was pretty much a nervous wreck all of the time, dunno how I got out of bed some days. I think I was scared the guy'd come to my house and drag me to work or something.
After six months he left me completely alone, and hired a new guy to yell at. I asked him why and he said I knew enough to fix some stuff, I was bright enough to figure out how to fix other stuff on my own, and I knew enough to ask questions if I ran into something I didn't know how to fix. He'd cycle through 4-5 new guys before one would stay long enough to reach the six month mark. It was kinda sad, most of them you could tell by the third day whether or not they were going to make it. I think I was the only one who actually appreciated the lesson, in hindsight. Frankly, nothing worth knowing is ever pleasant to learn - most women are -----s, you don't ever want the IRS to audit you, thieves suck, seatbelts work pretty well, and hotrex is obviously never sending me the Black Boss Porter he promised me seven months ago.
