boost spikes happen with an external wastegate for a couple of reasons( in theory)

1. Improper placement - the wastegate should be placed as close as possible to the turbo outlet flange - like at a collector.

2. with a T-3 or similar turbo the hole where the internal wastegate flapper was engineered...isn't normaly used.

this is the best setup if you can't center the wastegate.

plus this way you have a larger overall outlet for the downpipe. It is over 3" with wastegate open!
