Its just a guess but over the last year i have done a substantial amount of failure analysis related to valvetrain failure on a supercharged dohc marine engine that sees very high temperatures and load for extended periods of time. Most of our failures were a loss of lash related to seat wear and valve deformation / cupping due to temperature but every once in a while i saw catastrophic failures like this.
