Well if you don't ever plan on going more than 7 psi your current fuel setup will work, but you can't tune an FMU you just hook it up. With the afc and larger injectors you can tune it and if you ever want to up the boost to 10 or 11 psi you can safely.

Yeah I don't really see a need for the MSD 6AL. For retarding your timing you should look into the MSD BTM or you could also chip your ECU for retard. Not sure on your options for chipping though since you have odb2. Dizzy is short for distributor.

Oh okay man...dizzy. Got it. Anyways - I don't plan on going more than 7 psi. More than likely I'll stay at 6 psi. I don't want to break any records, I just want a little boost for the remainder of the time I have my car.

The MSD unit was merely an afterthought - I know it's not all that necessary.

I have my doubts about the whole timing retard thing though. A friend of mine is running a drag turbo kit on his 99 Si with the stock b16a2. There is no timing retard at all with that system. As you probably know..the drag unit uses a FMU, inline pump, and missing link - no timing retard whatsoever. He's been running 6 psi with no problems for a year now.

Is ignition timing really that necessary for 6 psi of boost? (probably more like 5 after the intercooler).

Nah, if you go with the FMU/fuel pump setup and only plan on running that much psi you will be fine.

Thanks for all the help man.

I just KNOW that after a few weeks of 6psi I will most likely want to go up to 8+. Only thing is, the S-AFC is so expensive. Getting bigger injectors isn't a big deal - I'm just on a budget here.

I see a lot of people on this site bragging about running 10-12 psi on a D16 - I really don't understand how it's possible - the internals on a d16 are so weak. Maybe I should do a bit more research and see what it will take to run 8 psi daily.

Are there any alternatives to the S-AFC that are any good?

I'm running 10-14 psi on an even weaker D15 daily.

How can you compare the cost of an AFC to the cost of a new shortblock and the hassle to swap the motors? Tuning is the key. If you had a stock D16 tuned perfect you could run 20 psi for quite a while before anything bad happened.

Dude I'm totally understanding that tuning and fuel management is the key, I'm just so antsy to get the project up and running. ----..I can't even decide which turbo to go with (t24, t3, 14b)

What would you recommend for fuel management on 8 psi?

I would say run 10 psi with an AFC and stop worrying about it. Spend the $200 on the AFC and you won't regret it.

haha....it's easy to tell somebody else to boost 10 psi on their motor.

I'm just trying to be thorough in my research. I don't know who to believe. Some people say don't go above 7 psi on a d16 and other people are like "***** out 15 psi, yo". Basically, I need to have this car for 2 and a half more years without the engine blowing - I could care less after that. It has 50k on it.

8-10 psi sounds delicious.

Well this site has been helpful so I thank everyone who's helped. I still have a lot more reading to do.

If you need your motor for the next 2 1/2 years, don't do anything to it. ---- happens no matter what you do. Whenever you change the performance of an engine you take the risk of breaking something. Everytime I hit full boost I am anticipating it blowing up. I don't expect it to, but I know that it will blow up one day and I won't be shocked when it does. You can't just add extra strain on your motor without having negative reactions. Take this how you will, but don't just throw a turbo on your car thinking everything is going to be great and nothing bad will ever happen. I'd hate to talk someone out of boosting there car, but if you can't be without this car for the next 2 1/2 years, don't touch it. Change the oil and drive it.
