Making a manifold.
ok guys i have gotten a few emails on where to locate and make up your own manifold. ill try to explain some steps and where to locate the parts.
now with 90 elbows and Tee's u can create any kind of manifold u want as you guys have seen beau do with the stainless steel manifold hes making right now. ok www.mcmaster.com has eveything u could possibly think of but i think there prices are outrageous. (5.59 for 1 1/2" elbow is crap, i can get em for 2.50$ cdn.) but if you choose to buy off mcmaster here is what u have to search "Unthreaded Steel Butt-Weld Pipe Fitting" "Butt-Weld (Aluminum) Pipe Fittings" (duno why u want alum) "Butt-Weld (Stainless Steel) Pipe Fittings" **MAKE SURE U HIT "CATALOG PAGES" FOR PRICE (SCROLL DOWN)** heres some pics of the weldable joints. as u can see you could design anything imaginable. http://www.mcmaster.com/param/images...150x100grp.gif http://www.mcmaster.com/param/images...14_150x100.gif finding someone with a welder is another thing ;) but i mean if your gonna pay 1200$ for a full raice manifold, u could buy a tigmate for 1199$ learn to tig weld and make the manifold for another 100$ and u have a TIG welder now.. hope that helps some people out there. |
Re:Making a manifold.
Pipe fittings are cheaper but the metal is more brittle than tubular stainless - thicker 14 or 16 g tubular is a little easier to work with and should be more durable - the material I use in my manifolds is 304L tubular 14 g. I'm not even going to tell you what these tee's sell for :o.
anyway I sell these for $350.00 uncoated and $425 with bright ceramic coating. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...1/fccc1076.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...4/fcefdd5a.jpg |

Re:Making a manifold.
how do you cut the holes for the wg and collector/flange?
I am considering buying a welder to try and make my manifold, but I couldnt possibly afford a plasma cutter as well.. also, I am not verry familiar with welding... how many amp welder should I look for to weld the "butt-weld" pipes and what type of welder do you need for stainless? |
Re:Making a manifold.
I used a bi metal holesaw in a drill press with alot of oil. My flanges are 3/8" and drilling took less that 30 minutes.. Most exhaust ports arent rounf tho.. a die grinder is used to create a transition from oval to round. This is common practice as your tubes will be round anyway... ;D

Re:Making a manifold.
I just bought a little Lincoln Electric "Handy MIG" from Lowes for about $260... works just fine if you're working with Mild Steel.
