AS SAID, don't get your T3's mixed up, I know what I'm talking about. There are 3 different turbos that come on the turbocoupes 1) an aiResearch .60/.63 T3 2) a Garrett .60/.48 T3 3) the Warner Ishi/IHI small T3 HOUSING...the turbine is NOT a Garrett T3 turbine. Which is the one you're showing in the picture.

why didnt you at least mention the numbers on the turbo.

To the IHI guru. Why are some turbos labeled VJ and others VI.

the only thing that the IHI thunderchicken turbos share with garrett/airesearch T3's is the flange. Other than that the IHIs are alot cheaper/smaller. Depends on your tastes i guess. I say go much bigger

VI series are typically Isuzu and VF are commonly found on Subaru. This shouldn't be considered gosepl though as there are many different IHI's found on many types of cars, the most common is what I am referring to.

Example:
The VI-34 (Isuzu Impulse turbo) number is called a short spec. V=Vehicle I=Isuzu 34=the first 2 numbers in the long spec. The long spec is actually the part number on the IHI bill of materials or the list of parts that make up the turbo right down to the snap rings, nuts and bolts. RHB5 is typically called the frame size. RH=Right Hand(the direction the wheel rotates) B=Generation( IHI is now on F in 2005) 5=size range(5 is approximately 80hp to 250hp) Within a frame size things like shaft diameter and bearings are common.

Lee's 91 Impulse RS - probably entirely different from the earlier RWD Impulse I think you mean - had a VJ11 on it.

The turbo was identical in every way to the old skool Subaru 1.8 DL turbos, except the turbine housing had a very strange flange w/ 5 bolts. Three were the exact same pattern as the Scooby stuff from late 70's-present, the other two were added in for no good reason I can think of.

Just a verbal footnote - seems we've gotten onto IHI's in general, and not the 87-88 TC's unit any longer.
