Modifiying Stock MAF's!
removing the "honey comb" on a MAF in any car I have ever witnessed does nothing but get rid of a negligible restriction, a perhaps unnecessary filter, and a rumored "flow straightening" design. Leaving it in is a free mod that's guaranteed not to ---- ---- up. Only time I would get rid of it is when replacing the maf table and moving the sensor to a plain aluminum tube of a + size to make it meter perhaps more air.
The 'thinking' thing I've done one or two thousand times has lead to things called 'wisdom' and 'insight'
I'd rather build a $10 freq-volt converter, and get a 3" GM MAF on the cheap, than ---- around with MAF clamps. It'll require you to find that pesky trip point in your code you are trying to bypass, but...

This update to my tune was free JD. And I think it is reasonably safe... got beef with it?
my setup = time + money
I am currently trying to use my leisure TIME to bypass my hard earned MONEY.
I also updated my tuning "capabilities" as homosexual as they are, to encompass any ODB1 6cylinder BMW made.
Time to find a local non homo with a 4cyl for me to play with up at UP.

I have taken Subaru JECS MAfs and modified them to the 400 whp subaru level.
Before.

Filling exterior with epoxy

Milling out

Aftermilling

Hits 5 volts at 28-30 psi? Don't know the actual flow #s, but pretty darn good.

I'm not criticising, but like I said it's wisdom and insight developed over years.
Look at my original posts on pgmfi to see the sort of ghetto *** trash ideas I cut my teeth on. Not so different from what you are doing, you are learning valid lessons.
Now, go fist a chicken.

You can't beat a GM maf, and if you get the right conversion setup (such as like the mafT used on DSM's) it can be used as a blow-through setup with very good results. I've seen more than a few DSM setups run a 61mm compressor and larger with a GM blow-through at numbers as high as 30-35psi.
