ok my sister has a pos vw the thing broke down... ok you crank it it cranks but the cam gear and belt dont move belt seems to be tight..

ok now i have this pos apart valve cover off IM offf ---- load of tubes and ----!!! did a leak down i can also feel air comming out of the middle intake valve in each cylinder (this ---- has 3 intake valves per cylinder ) how much do you guys think will 4 intake valves run and ?# of exhuast valves. :1 she needs this ---- fixed so we can at least sell it its a 02 jetta i am stomped even the heaD bols are some gay *** star bits and i need it to be skinny and 2+ inches long to go down the hole

sounds like it skipped a tooth and the pistons ate valves for lunch. the middle intake valves are the only ones that usually hit

Welcome to the 1.8T. It is full of fail.
Chances are you wont get the timing back correctly. It will always be a half tooth off. Better do some homework before you tackle this one.

Pull the head, if its only got a few valves bent, get a machine shop to fix it for you. If most of them are trash, get another head, making sure its for the correct engine, there are like 10 variations of the 1.8 so make sure you get the right one. There should be a tab on the side of the head with 3 letter engine code stamped in the head like ABA or something like that.

 

I've had 3 or 4 1.8Ts come through my bay in the last year that were destroyed because the owner didn't change the oil often enough and/or didn't use synthetic oil.

they are very sensitive to oil sludging and because of the complicated hydraulic variable valve train, you can eat the valves in a heartbeat.

the headbolts are either TORX or POLYDRIVE, and if you don't have the dealer tools, don't try to take the cams out.

 

I have a buddy with a '99 Passat 1.8t who is on his third motor less than 100k on the chassis. Replaced the head and reringed the engine.

The first motor he popped the timing belt doing 120mph for 30 min. or so.

The second motor he drove his car through a foot deep water puddle and hydro locked it.

The third motor the shop replaced his second motor forgot to check the oil, a brand new crate motor from VW, and ruined it during a test drive.

The forth came out of a supposedly car with less than 50K miles on it. The shop who messed up the third motor promised him if the fourth motor does not work to his likeing that they by him a new crate motor from VW.

The strange thing looking at Tuning 101 book (if my memory serves me rigth) they have a 1.8t w/ 300+ whp w/o craking open the motor. Just ECU reflash, turbo upgrade, and fuel management upgrade.

 

The amount of power an engine is capable of has exactly nothing to do with its ability to hold that power and/or be reliable.

 

yeah, they can. the internals are good for 350 400 ish hp and just as much tq stock. the 1.8t is stout as ----. unfortunately for the consumer, the electronics, parts, and assemblywere done in mexico, which caused a ton of fail in all the models made there.

i love vw with every fiber in my being, but they can try a *****'s patience sometimes.
