There's a few 1.8Ts around my area that are pretty quick with a turbo swap and piping/intercooler upgrade.

Its a dumbass design, and no that chain tensioner does nothing for variable timing control (ala 96. What that tensioner does do constantly is leak like a **** and since it takes it oil from the cams, Ive seen a number of cylinder heads and sometimes engines replaced due to the cams seizing. Not to mention the endless sludge problems. VW solution? synthetic oil and the old big *** diesel filter. Yeah. :1
Yeah it can make 400hp on the stock bottom but so can my old as ---- outdated d16a6.
Its only redeeming factor is that it makes a buttload of bottom end torque. Which is great for a street car, but worthless in my world. :P

Not to mention that there's one less part in that system, one less significantly weaker part than the rest.

Goddamn GM 3.4 liter DOHC failure design right there.

What a pile. It was rumored that they made shitloads of power in the test muels.
Still a pile of ---- IMO.
I still have never understood the reasoning behind running a chain on the backside.
Even the Yamaha V6 in the SHO is the same way.
