perty simple belt drives gear on exhaust cam exhaust cam has a chain that connects it to the intake cam in the middle there is a tensioner looking thing with a solenoid on the outside of the head looks like a cam timing over lap control device of some sort

Simplicity in design.

If it's not a pushrod V8, timing chain = failure design.

lol Hyundai beta 2.0's have the same valve train design cam belt drives one cam then a chain from one cam to the next. Seems to me it would make it slightly easier to put the belt on. I just helped on a mazda 626 and it was a pita to get the cams in sync and every time we got them to the damn crank would move.

slightly easier, yes. however, it's more moving parts in an engine of already questionable quality assembled in mexico by the lowest bidder.
