question about testing a block
I am out of ohio, and I have been searching around for a replacement B16 shortblock for my car locally. My biggest fear is buying a shortblock to swap out my dead one, goto start it up and find out its shot also.
So basically my question is, is there a way to test the compression or what not for a shortblock?
I have a very short leash when using friends garages so I only get 1 shot at swapping blocks (mine cracked a ringland in #4 and the compression went to 50 )

Re:question about testing a block
So why do you need a shortblock? replace the pistons and call it a day. You cant test compression on a shortblock, It has to be a longblock and attached to a tranny w/ a starter so you can crank it over to get a compression reading.

Well, I guess I could just use what I got, I will try to find a shop around where I live that could maybe do a stock rebuild or maybe even some aftermarket internals for me......

Re:question about testing a block
No need ? Take the head off, take it to a machine shop have them resurface it and clean it up nice.
go buy a:
Head gasket
Ring Compressor
Ball Hone (60-90mm)
ITR/GSR/CTR Pistons From Ebay (with rings) STD BORE
4 quarts of oil
Gallon of coolant
Drop the oil pan, pop the pistons out, take them to the machine shop have them press on your new pistons and re-install. Putting in pistons in a honda (incar rebuild) is so freaking easy you wouldnt beleive it.

Abaz, one last thing to add. I am going to college soon to learn how to build engines (high performance engines in general). I have been trying to steer away from taking any small classes to keep myself as dumb as possible so I can soak everything in good and not be a smart *** about certain subjects. My dad puts together mopar engines all the time. Do you think this would be easy enough for me to try to tackle myself with my dads help? I would love to do this myself. The experience would probly do me a little good too.

Dude this sounds perfect for your situation, this will get your feet wet before your schooling. Having dad knowing engine knowledge is even better. Make it a fun event, its really easy. Just take your time do a little research and you'll be good to go.
