Default motor will not rev above 3200 rpms

Hello,

i have been reading this forum extensively to prepare my car for a turbo. I have a stock D16A6 in an 89 CRX. I just finished changing my headgasket, it wasn't blown, I just wanted to prep it for a future turbo. I used the oem D16z6 (mls) head gasket and arp studs. While doing this I also removed my A/C compressor, condesor, and all the A/C lines. Anyways, now the motor will not rev above 3200 rpms in any gear and in neutral. It just stutters when I try to go past 3200 rpms, but it seems to run perfectly before that. The check engine light is also on now, not sure if they are related. FYI, I also got the head milled and I did the timing and it's good. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks in advance. Tom

Jump the Ecu and check the code, im sure once you fix that, your problem will also be fixed.

Thanks, I will do that and let you guys know. Also, I just noticed that I forgot to connect a hose, and I don't know where it goes. I think it's the pcv hose on the IM and it looks like it connects to the rubber boot thing just underneath the manifold (see picture of the tube in question), am I correct?

yes, and from there, under the IM it goes to the black box on the back of the block.

The timing light blinked 4 times, so it was the crank angle sensor. I disconnected the wires from the dizzy and noticed some grease inside, so I cleaned it and it solved the problem. However, right when I pulled away from my house for a test drive, the timing belt broke - what is the odds of me having some bent valves?

Depends on a lot of things. It is of course and interference engine, so there is a chance of it. Just pull the head and check it out. Otherwise a boreoscope (sp?) to look in there.

Damn, I kinda feel bad for you since it seems like you tried to do this right and then it all blew-up at you.

I'm guessing you had the timing belt either way too tight, or way too loose...probably loose. Pull the head, check it out.

I've seen interference motors not bend valves, and other bend valves, so who knows...good luck to you. At least this is a D series where parts cost nothing, and not something pricey like a b16 head..

Yeah, it's pretty frustrating thinking that the head may be damaged now since it was perfectly fine to begin with. It's different if the motor wasn't working to begin with. I first thought that the timing belt broke because it was old and I had to take if on and off the cam gear several times to get the timing right. However, could it be possible that it broke due to the crank angle sensor going out while I was driving? Earlier I couldn't rev past 3200 rpms due to the crank angle sensor. If I'm driving and the motor was at 4000 rpms and the crank angle sensor goes out (loses connection to the ecu) what would happen?

Also, instead of pulling the head, I was thinking of putting on a new belt and getting a compression test done. That should be sufficient enough to tell me if anything happened to the head right?

Thanks, Tom
