from what my machinist told me when doing my z6 vitara build, since we have "flat" cranks there is no need to balance the crank, just match the weight of each rod/piston/pin/clip/ring combo with each other and you're golden. My 13 psi 8,000rpm panty rippers dont seem to mind it so its all good with me.

I asked the machine shop this q and he told me that simply the big end of the rods must all weigh the same, and the small end of the rods must all weigh the same.
Additionally, all rods must all have the same weight
I figured this can be achieved by holding the opposite end with a pencil and laying the other end onto a small scale. (But thats just my idea, this may not work)

theroetically it could work but is is just easier to weigh the whole rod itself and go from there.

i just took my ---- to the machine shop. i got pistons and rods balanced to .5 grams of each other and crank balanced to 14k

it was pretty cheap

full rotating assembly balance is 65 bucks which is cheap considering if you ---- it up your out a g or so depending on what your building

i would be more interested in diy balancing. the machine shops around here charge out the butt for it.
