Can someone explain to me why these are considered so bad, when nearly every other motor is a closed deck design (including H22's if I'm correct). Isn't the block guard, if properly installed, simply imitating the effect of having a closed deck block?

A closed deck block was designed to be a closed deck block. An open deck block was designed to be an open deck block. The blockguard slows coolant flow, distorts cylinders, and creates "hot spots". If it is properly installed(welded, bored,...)and the coolant passages are large enough to allow proper cooling I would say it might not have a problem, but at the same time I don't think this piece of ---- is going to stop your sleeves from cracking. It's a cheap fix/hack to "try" and prevent the sleeves from cracking. Maybe it's just me, but if my sleeve is at the point to where a piece of aluminum might prevent it from grenading, I might need to consider a more permanent solution to the problem.

Dr. Boost, I think that's the most well thought out explanation I have ever heard. That's better than "They suck, and people who use them are gay."

Haha, that's funny because I have probably used that explanation before as well.

<<<<<not a big fan of blockguards.
