I never line it up with the marks, i always pull #1 plug and fire a long shaft in there(3/8 extension works great if you have a long enuf one), rotate the crank manually until you are TDC, this way you are always 100% sure where you are at no matter what the marks say.

sorry to thread jack but, i also was wanting to make sure what timing marks to set at idle? i have three marks plus tdc mark. my question is on the center mark on the three = 16* btdc.
is this the one needs to be set at for base timing at idle?
