to change a fd i thought you need the ringgear and mainshaft

nope, ring gear and pinion, which is machined into the countershaft

LS/GSR/B16/etc all have the same teeth for the FD. Only the type R countershaft has different teeth.

my tranny has a 4.266 final. turbohf has a s4c gear set I was contompalting pickin up

No I'm not, they all have 15 teeth, but after looking at them, it looks like the helix pitch is way different so they wouldn't mesh together correctly.
