idle high enough?
when you adjust the timing, your idle should be at 670 rpm (USA) or 750 rpm (Canada).
don't worry about the physical position of the distributor. I've had a few that were out of whack.

so i should adjust the idle screw to get the right idle after timing is set?

Don't forget to jump the service check connector. This removes all ignition timing corrections.
