Can I put D16 guts in my bastard D17?

Can I put D16 guts in my bastard D17?
Ok, I have a 2001 civic ex with the lame *** d17 motor. Without rods and pistons it isn't even worth trying to boost it. Rods and pistons for it are more than I want to spend. From what I have gathered is all D's have the same bore. The d17 and d16 have the same deck height and the cranks have the same main size.
Even the d16 and d17 rods are the same lenght. the crank just has more storke and the pin is higher in the pistons.
But you can't just use d16 rods on the d17 crank without machining the width of the big end of the rod down alot which kinda defeats the purpose.
So what I am thinking of doing is use a d16 crank with tuner toys rods and vitara pistons in a low buck build. It seems like it should work but I can't find anybody that has actually done it. Lots of talk, but that is about it. And 7th gen guys don't seem to be much on DIY stuff.
Thanks
Randy

turbo that damn d17 boy.

Yes, I made myself a manifold a while back, but talked myself out of turboing the car since it wasn't worth the gains to me. Sure an extra 50 horse would be nice and make it pretty fast in a hatch. But with my car loaded down with the wife and two kids it would still be a dog, but it would now be a dog that could throw a rod at anytime.

If you're really bent on turboing it, why not just buy a d16 long block? They can be had for nothing then you don't have to go mixing and matching parts, just send it out build it, and you don't have much down time. As for engine management i guess you'd still be kinda fucked because i don't know ---- about em2's but i suppose you could run the motor on a p28 and somehow wire the engine harness to the car harness. Makes it kinda difficult seeing that the d17 has no distro and probably a shitload of other changes. Guess on that note you might be better sticking with it.
