How many places can you burn water from?
besides crack sleve, or blown head gasket?
I just took a smoking HF motor out in favor of an SI (A6) motor I had lying around. I dont remeber my A6 ever smoking, but I noticed some white smoke coming out my exhaust. Not alot but its there, I also noticed some water driping out the exhaust tip. Anybody know whats going on?

Water should drip out of your exhaust if everything is burning correctly. Buring any hydrocarbon in air creates water and CO2 (with other oxides and nitrogen gas) so a little drip is fine. If you see huge voluminous clouds of white smoke, shut it off. If all you see is a little six inch puff of white, let it be. It just means your engine is burning gasoline inside of the cylinders not to be an *** or anything. You could also have a coolant line accidentally hooked up to vacuum. I have seen that before...

ok.. well, im just mentioning this because u said u just swapped in the a6. have u taken the motor out for a test drive and it still smoked.. or did u put the motor in, start it and see the white smoke. because it's normal to see a little white smoke when the car/engine/exhaust is all cold...

After a test drive, I noticed no signs of smoke. Problem solved I guess. I had a leaking thermostat housing that I swaped out, I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

ummmmmm..... very possible, if an engine is sitting for a while, it will usually smoke a little after you install it. when i did my first swap, i cleaned my engine bay and i think some cleaner dripped in my downpipe and that ---- smoked like a mo fo for two days.........

I wonder if you had left over coolant from the hf motor still in the exhaust. When I do head gaskets on customers cars they usually have to burn or evaporate the coolant first. Thats just my two cents :P
