I had an ex-roomate with a new off the showroom floor Cabrio he was Dukes of Hazarding in and out of because the crazy *** half Irish half sandnig bastard was too lazy to drop it off at the dealer. Same thing happened to the Passat that replaced it the following year.
Should I list off the other ten or fifteen people I know personally with new VWs that have handle problems?

JD: i worked in parts at a vw dealer for 2 1/2 years and maybe sold a dozen, including body shop orders

So far, in a years time, my shitty 95 jetta has had the following problems:
1) both pass and drivers door locks broke, so I couldn't get in on a 10 degree windy-*** winter night when drunk
2) the pvc breather hose is plastic, and it split down the seam covering my engine compartment with oil.
3) spark plug changing sucks
4) all 4 springs broke, and struts blew up as well
5) electrical nighmares, just too many to list
6) vacuum locks are total ----, won't go down by themselves
7) clutch blew up without warning.
axles spew grease like no tomorrow
9) speedo only works sometimes
German engineering is a joke. I will never buy one again. I have replaced more on this car in a year than I have replaced on all of my hondas combined (5 in all).

4) all 4 springs broke, and struts blew up as well i find that really hard to believe, springs just dont break, especialy all 4 at once
7) clutch blew up without warning. when a clutch actually breaks(not wears out) you dont get a warning, thats why my civic is sitting in the driveway
axles spew grease like no tomorrow i bet you need new boots, pretty comon on most FWD cars that are aging

the other things you mentioned are comon VW problems, do research before you buy a car. blame yourself for being lazy not the car. all european cars need more up-keep then any car on planet, especialy one that is 15 years old

Yes they are the door handles from 80's to early/mid 90's VW's.It is a sign of poor engineering along with poor quality material used which is a common problem in VW's.I was a apprentice mechanic in Whistler a ski resort/town where VW's were very popular among locals and i spent more then my fair share of time fixing stupid ---- on VW's that shouldnt break in the first place.Mechanical parts wearing out is to be expected but the amount of parts/system components in one of those cars that could have simply been designed better is just sad I really like old Rabbit GTI's though and would almost build one of those up as there is way less to break on the older ones.
