When I was done with UTI, I still didn't really know what I was doing. I needed more experience. I learned soooooo much when I actually started working.
I worked for Mercedes for 3.5 years and got the ***** of it. I realized I didn't want to work on cars for the rest of my life. I also got sick of alot of other bullshit.
Ex. Cleaning snow off of cars while you are punched on the job. (not getting paid)
Doing jobs that you don't get paid for.
Bullshit warranty work that doesn't pay ----.
Getting stuck in traffic and losing money. (If you have to test drive a car and the test drive pays 12 mins and you don't get back for 35 mins well then tough ----, you only get paid 12 mins) its fun working for free
When there is no work you don't get paid.
There is alot more that I can bitch about.
The senior guys or favorites got most of the good jobs. Flat-rate really sucks when you get shitty jobs. It can be awesome when you get good jobs. And like Jeff said, you need to learn to right a good story to get paid.
I know that being an automotive tech was not the job for me. There are much easier jobs that pay better. Its alot of work for not that much money. And the flat-rate times just kept going down. It got harder and harder to make money. I love working on cars, but not for a living. I know I wouldn't want to be doing that ---- when I'm older(40-50 yrs.old). My back and knees would be shot. I love not having to deal with the bullshit. I'm going to college now.
If you have any specific questions pm me.
