There's nothing wrong with full fielding the alternator, aside from engine drag issues, not with any design I'm aware of anyway. All the street rods they dropped SBC into over the years usually ended up that way.
Last time I bought an alternator at Checker the guy told me to make sure my battery was FULLY charged or else it will burn up the new alternator because it will have to work extra hard trying to charge the drained battery. :S

In a healthy electrical system the battery just sits there and does nothing. *Everything* runs off the alternator, and you do not work the alternator harder by the battery not being there. If the battery supplied any electricity during vehicle operation it would run low and die. The battery is a stored charge to operate the starter, and nothing else.

exactly. im just saying with the positive cable being disconnected it will full field. i thought it would shorten the life but i was misinformed. what you said i never disagreed.

i was always under the impression that if a battery was not fully operational or there was a bettery connection not fully connected it would cause the voltage regulator to full field, doing this constantly would burn it out correct???
