Re: Did I get screwed?

Just got back from the machine shop, he thought it was warped at first but he got out the straight edge and feeler gauges and checked it all out. It's not warped, atleast not to the point where it would cause the gasket not to seal it.

He also said this that was interesting, he said that it had been previously rebuilt (I'm guessing when it was p/p'd) but it had also been overheated since because there was a little tab on it and the center had melted out (the metal in the center melts at like 260 degrees). So we figured thats why it was milled. Then he said it had obviously been run since it was rebuilt, for a long time, cause there is a ton of build up on the valves.

Basically it boiled down to $160 to have it rebuilt, valves ground, checked for cracks, and totally cleaned.

Thanks for all the input, not sure what I'm going to do now.

This pic worrys me the most..........look at the seats and valves

It's a above average porting job from JG, which ain't saying a whole lot!!!!!

Have the exhaust guides checked out. With them cut back that far they tend to wobble and use oil.

That along with it being overheated AFTER it was PnP, then milled is why the valves look so brown.

jesus, you guys are wankers, that head isnt that bad at all. A little carbon build up and your freaking out like the head is destroyed or something. It's pretty obvious the head was fully redone by JG... probably like 4-5 years ago and the head has been on the car ever since. The tab that was melted off was more than likly taken off by JG when they do the rebuild.

Now as far as the price, I'm sure that head probably cost 1000 bucks back in the day when it was done, but I wouldnt pay more than 500 bucks for it now.

If your stuck with the thing, I'd just take all the valves out, wire wheel all the carbon off, give them a quick lap and wire brush the CC.

The intake side is very nice, but like you said the exhaust side is pretty nasty. I just dropped it off at the machine shop for a full tear down and rebuild, inspection, cleaning, and valve grind. I also asked them to check and make sure the valves are not currently leaking and do not leak when they are finished.

dont back out...unless it was an "ill send it and you pay if you like it" deal. otherwise just go get the thing cleaned up and run it.
