I think i kind of want to go with toshiba or dell. I really like those xps's but they are so god damn expensive.
I am used to desktops where i can build one myself for cheap as hell.

if youre talking to me, yes mine is the 17 inch widescreen, 504 ram, 1.73 ghz, dvd burner...i think it was about 1400. the only thing that took getting used to is not having the stalk in the keyboard and having a slightly different key layout since there is also a number pad

If your going to be moving it around alot, (ie, not sitting on a table for 6months at a time being used as a destop), Id strongly recomend getting something with a quality case. Thinkpads are very sturdy. Newer Thinkpads also have a G sensor that stops the HD from spinning if it detects a tip, so the HD stops before it hits the floor.
For $1500 you can have a pretty sweet laptop.
I bought a T43 earlier this year for $1100 new. The T series is very small, light and compact. I havnt dropped it yet, but I did drop my old Thinkpad (non-metal skeleton/case like the newer ones) several times from waist high, to the pavement. Fucker kept on going.
If battery run time is of any concern, score a bigger main battery, underclock and under volt the CPU and you can usually double the batt time.

Search around and find a model you like, then browse reputable sellers on Ebay for Factory reconditioned or a new one. Pricegrabber.com is a good search to use also. Overall, I usually buy ---- from Newegg.com. They have good prices on ----, ship fast, and a no bullshit RMA if you need to return.

Regarding Thinkpads, if ultimate package size and weight are not really a concern, the R series is better/cheaper than an equivalent T series.

Regardless of what you get, make sure to get atleast a Pentium M processor. A Core Duo or Core 2 Duo would be sweet, but not really needed unless you want to play games. The basic Pentium M cpu is totally diff. from the standard P4 power hog CPU's and are very similar to the Core processors in terms of power consumption. I was very suprised at how fast mine turned out to be for only a 1.86 Pentium M.

Im sure you've noticed, but Thinkpad was sold by IBM and now goes by Lenovo.

I think what im going to do is go to the navy exchange here on base and get a military star card and get it on that then make like 100$ a month payments on it.
Only problem i see on newegg (former egghead.com i take it) is that id have to pay all up front.
