deploy?laptop?Advice?!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I am going to be going on alot of trips starting here in early november, first is san diego for a big military excercise. Then after that il have alot to other places then eventually the middle east deployment.
I don't have a laptop and after the last few trips, it would really be nice to get one. So if any of you use laptops, or know where to get good deals on laptops let me know and say the pro's and con's of yours.
Compared to desktop's laptops are so damn expensive that i want to make sure i make the rite choice the first time.

thanks

I have an old Dell inspiron 2650, I got a good deal on it locally. Does everything that I have wanted it to so far.

Just get something that can browse the internet. The only laptop I have been happy playing games on is my brothers Alienware.

I hate to say it man but... I saw a few decent laptops at walmart 2.5 gig decent ram and I think like a smallish 60g harddrive for like 549 or something. thats not to bad..and laptops are over priced.

Hey Jason, is yours the 17" widescreen? Whats it got for ram? cpu?dvd burner? any other stuff?
I think i kind of want to go with toshiba or dell. I really like those xps's but they are so god damn expensive.
I am used to desktops where i can build one myself for cheap as hell.

Re: deploy?laptop?Advice?!!!!!!!!!!!

There are a lot of basic laptops that sell for sub $600 now. Look at something like that and then just upgrade the memory and call it a day.

Holy christ. There are a lot of options for $1500. That can get you a pretty decent laptop. I personally would go with something like a thinkpad or dell that has a lot of second-hand parts so you can upgrade cheaply.

if youre talking to me, yes mine is the 17 inch widescreen, 504 ram, 1.73 ghz, dvd burner...i think it was about 1400. the only thing that took getting used to is not having the stalk in the keyboard and having a slightly different key layout since there is also a number pad

Re: deploy?laptop?Advice?!!!!!!!!!!!

If your going to be moving it around alot, (ie, not sitting on a table for 6months at a time being used as a destop), Id strongly recomend getting something with a quality case. Thinkpads are very sturdy. Newer Thinkpads also have a G sensor that stops the HD from spinning if it detects a tip, so the HD stops before it hits the floor.
For $1500 you can have a pretty sweet laptop.
I bought a T43 earlier this year for $1100 new. The T series is very small, light and compact. I havnt dropped it yet, but I did drop my old Thinkpad (non-metal skeleton/case like the newer ones) several times from waist high, to the pavement. Fucker kept on going.
If battery run time is of any concern, score a bigger main battery, underclock and under volt the CPU and you can usually double the batt time.

Search around and find a model you like, then browse reputable sellers on Ebay for Factory reconditioned or a new one. Pricegrabber.com is a good search to use also. Overall, I usually buy ---- from Newegg.com. They have good prices on ----, ship fast, and a no bullshit RMA if you need to return.

Regarding Thinkpads, if ultimate package size and weight are not really a concern, the R series is better/cheaper than an equivalent T series.

Regardless of what you get, make sure to get atleast a Pentium M processor. A Core Duo or Core 2 Duo would be sweet, but not really needed unless you want to play games. The basic Pentium M cpu is totally diff. from the standard P4 power hog CPU's and are very similar to the Core processors in terms of power consumption. I was very suprised at how fast mine turned out to be for only a 1.86 Pentium M.

I think what im going to do is go to the navy exchange here on base and get a military star card and get it on that then make like 100$ a month payments on it.
Only problem i see on newegg (former egghead.com i take it) is that id have to pay all up front.

if its eventually going to the desert, I wouldnt expect it to come out of the desert. When I was there, everything and i mean everything had sand in it.

if theres one at walmart for $600-, id buy it.

Re: deploy?laptop?Advice?!!!!!!!!!!!

For up to 1500 build your self a laptop based on an Asus barebone.. I use them all the time on customers and they are rock solid. I have built around 5 or 6 of them and non have them have had a single issue.

http://usa.asus.com/products1.aspx?l1=5

Asus actually makes a lot more laptops than you'd think. The new small dell and mac notebooks are all made by asus.

What you'd be buying is a laptop shell with everything but ram, harddrive, and cpu, and sometimes dvd player (depends oin model)..then you pick order some ram a harddrive and a cpu that best fits ur needs and budget. voila. amazing laptop for an affordable price. ewiz.com is where i usually end up buying my barebones from. directron.com has a few as well, and newegg has a small selection

ohh yeah, and if your going to deploy, ensure you have a good DVD player, good speakers and a good video/sound card. You will be using it alot. if you want to, also have a decent side HD to store some movies so your not lugging them around. Or pick up an external HD to put them on.

Especially the indestructible T-series. R-series is decent like leed said, but not as sturdy. Everything else is fragile plastic.

Get a T30, hatchfag, they come with up to a 2 Ghz processor and can be had for sub-$500 sometimes with a month or two of warranty left on them.

I'd be careful buying the Lenovo Thinkpads until I hear more feedback on them.

Solid computer/// that is an asus, ie the company i wqas talkign about earlier...

Most dell laptops are giant pieces of ----...my mom gets them from work and they are ultra ------- shitty. they are both much slower than they should be for the specs they have, and are of poor quality. keys broken, trim broken. I also have a clients dell laptop sitting on my work table right now...its only 2 years old and is now completely wasted. motherboard would need replaced and thtey are too expensive to make it worth it.

upon inspection of this dell laptop, it is made by a company named compal....complete ---- company...dell uses some shady companies to make their parts

Kadena, I was there last night as a matter of fact ;)

Im telling you, if you plan on taking a computer or any electronic devices to the desert, dont expect it to be 100% when you come back. Then again things have changed since I was there...I slept in a ------- tent, cockgobblers these days sleep in 'dorm' style living from what im told. Take the advice for what you will. When your keyboard is fucked up and your monitor is all scratched to hell and you have sand in the CD rom...you'll remeber, JYR told you so. :P

ohh yeah,
Spain, Italy, Germany, Portgual, been through the Straight of Gebralter, Haiti, Kuwait, S. Korea...and im here in Oki right now. im hoping to go to mainland for the TAS in January.
