Converting to external gate is particularly easy in DSM turbo applications, as they have a divorced turbine discharge area. i.e. the wastegate flow is seperate from the turbine discharge. For this type of turbo, all you would want to do is remove the internal flapper, and have a pipe coming off of the flange which leads to the gate, from there you can either route the excess to atmoshpere, or route it back into the exhaust downstream.
