Kinda weird ----, but my buddy had a 91 probe gt (turbo), and it did the same damn thing. We used the wrong nipple for the oil filter, it was too short. Blew off one day, starved the turbo of oil. Damn thing didn't smoke blue though, it was white, so we thought a blown head gasket, but it had no symptoms. We replaced the turbo, and boom, went away. I'd replace the turbocharger, but I couldn't tell you why it happens.

how?...running a water-cooled turbo without the coolant lines is pretty common practice, ive done it numerous times without a single problem
