Default Shaft Play, fixable with new bearings?

Hey guys, i've got some shaft play with my t3/t4 turbonetics turbo & i've begun to smoke from the exhaust. I've done a compression test on the engine & checked my valves to make sure that the problem was just the turbo, which it is. My question is, do i only need to replace the bearings to correct the shaft play or is there soemthing else in addtion to the bearings that holds the shaft from wobbeling? TIA

Tony

thats not what i asked tho.. i'd like to know what else holds the shaft still, i already have an extra 360degrees thrust bearing sitting here new.. this is why i'm wondering if i really need to buy anything other than the bearings.

teh thrust bearing is usually the prob when you have in/out play.
i said to get a complete rebuild kit because if you are going to take the turbo apart because of smoking and shaft play you might as well do it all while you have it apart.

ok, that makes sence.

one other question. If the whole rebuild kit is about 90bucks & i can get a whole center section that has all fresh internals for about 150 bucks. do you think i should just get the new center housing or are they normally fine?

$150 for a fesh center section is pretty good.
but i would go with the rebuild kit just because i liek to things myself. and then i can olny blame myself if it ***** up.

this is true.. but does the cast housing actually wear out in any way?

other than the oil/water line threads getting stripped they are virtually indestructible

The CHRA should be fine...

If you tear into it and find a ton of buildup or coking, then buy a new section, but most likely it will be fine with a little elbow grease.

Make sure you know which compressor seal you have before you order a kit, there are a few different kinds so you need to make sure you get the correct one.

I just rebuilt my turbo so let me know if you have any questions. Good luck.
