Re: Is this rod usable? pic
i thought you might like to know... i just dropped my pan and pulled the rod that was wiggling around. The cap looks the same exact way. Alll discolered like that. My bearing looks like ass. Its paper thin and material was pushing out the side. its fucked. join the club :-[

when in doubt throw it out

Re: Is this rod usable? pic
how about instead of everyone tellin him to take it and check it tell him how to check it with a caliper or bore scope
a bore scope is really un needed though put th erod together with bearing in rod open the caliper perferably a dial type and measure about avery 1/4 on an inch around or even .10 and then get stock tolerances from eagle compare you should be good the sanding problem is easily resolved with a thicker bearing you shouldnt have a problem with it being egg shaped if you do get a new rod or vise it while using a caliper should work out for you |

Re: Is this rod usable? pic
I think dial bore guage is the term we are looking for ladies and gents. I agree with rawr. Dial calipers are good for measuring within about 0.001" usually. considering bearing crush tolerence is usually specified in .0001" then a dial caliper isn't going to cut it. Most of us don't have a dial bore guage because they start somewhere around $400 and go up from there. So like everyone has said, a machine shop would be best to check out the journal for out of round proper diameter. I do have to agree with JD, I wouldn't trust a rod that was discolored that badly.

Re: Is this rod usable? pic
first off ---- face im a machinest so with that said i said nothing about using sand paper it was said that that was already used on the rod most people that sand a machined surface like that arent that stupid as to use lanything below a 400 grit paper which would be fine for this and the tolerance i mean ---- i wetsand most of my machined surfaces before sealing anything and a machine shop odds are is gonna tell you to get a new rod they dont wanna deal with it.
and thank your for the corection on the bore guage |
Re: Is this rod usable? pic
Just go by a machine shop and get it checked. My year one machinist instructor would kick you in the nuts for measuring that with a caliper. :1

Re: Is this rod usable? pic
