Ok this may sound dumb but they seem to serve alot of the same purposes and functions. can some please explain them.

Thanks Jason

BOV is a unit that vents the air from the chargepipes when you shift or let off the gas... when you let off the gas after boosting and your throttle shuts, that air will reverse and damage the turbo, so the BOV allows the air to escape in that situaton using vacume to open it.

WASTEGATE is a unit that opens at a certain PSI and opens a valve as to allow no more exhaust to power the turbo so you don't destroy the motor... say 7 psi... so at 7 psi, the exhaust by passes the turbo and goes right into the exhaust.

boost controller is a little valve or spirng to RAISE the boost pressure. It goes BEFORE the wastegate so that the desired (7 psi) can be raised to get more power...

Most turbo's have internal wastegates on them... it's that little flapper you see on the exhaust side. Once the turbo get's to a certain pressure, the wastegate is connected to a shaft (or rod) which opens that the flapper.

the boost controller goes between the hose that goes to the wastegate... it's just a vac line running from the turbo, to the wastegate.

Here's a pic of my old BOV... it just goes onto the chargepipes, and the vac lines on the top of the BOV goes to your intake manifold side..:

Ok this makes sense know, but alot of guys talk about using external gates like tial on turbos with internal gates, how and why would you do this?

Look at the 2nd picture

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...;threadid=6172

That's an external wastegate connected to the exhaust manifold. Much easier to adjust the boost than an internal unit.

alright but if you have an internal and want to run an extenal do you have to modify it?

make the internal wastegate actuator so it doesn't move.. or disconnect it so it can't read any pressure
