Get a wide band and get it tuned,
Check your waste gate if its stuck open
Do a charge pipe leak test

Ya your wastegate isnt closing or u have a boost leak. Check your charge pipes with some soapy water. Knocking is not a sound you want to hear. It would really suck to blow your motor b4 u even hit boost wouldn't it. There is a leak somewere find it and you will be good. Tune it before you hit boost white plugs =no good!

Put soapy water in a spray bottle, pressurize your charge pipes and spray suspected possible leaks (mostly on couplers). Taking off the vac hose doesn't mean that your wastegate is fully closed.
Are you using an internal w.g? if so, get a "helper" spring to help shut it completely. Is it a new turbo?

NO, you have to have pressure in you pipes for the soap to work. If you just idle it will such the water into to intake system. A better idea is to find someone or take up the habit of smoking, Start the car in an area where there is no wind, and exhall the smoke around the charge pipes and see where is it drawn too.

FYI, You rad fan must be off also.
