well nogs, i built a turbo gas turbine engine a couple years ago

i put a trailer load of chopped wood and bbq fuel in it, then 5 gal of diesel splashed in, left to sit overnight, then in the morning, IGNITION.

100# gas bottle modified for combustion chamber, plenty of 2" pipe, and some HMT arc welder love
turbo is a .50 / .70 garrett t4 w/ twin scroll ex housing, free from truck wreckers yard....


------- BEAST! It ran hard at WOT with boost gauge pegged for 10 mins, then as it ran out of wood, fuel pump died and seized turbo............

A friend of mine built a gas turbine out of a T3 from a Merkur:






Same problem with oiling... after it spun up and ran for a few seconds, the bearing seized and the shaft twisted off. Pretty impressive to watch.

what are the reasons to build one of these? Besides the cool factor.

 

it runs on burning wood / diesel mix. compressed air blow into the bottom of the chamber, and through a bbq grate holding the wood, air makes wood burn, super hot gases drive turbine. rinse and repeat.
