Default Lateral shaft play fixable?

Okay, we all know that if a turbo has lateral shaft play (in and out) its pretty much dead, but does anyone know if it’s rebuildable with a rebuild kit? When I was searching thru this site, I noticed that people only rebuilt the turbo when they needed to replace their seals. When people mentioned they had lateral shaft play, they were told that the turbo was a boat anchor, or that it’s not worth rebuilding it. However, since a rebuild kit is roughly the same price as another j-yard turbo, I don’t see why more people don’t rebuild the turbo. If you think about it, since its just a matter of time before the "new" j-yard turbo goes bad, why don’t people don’t rebuild it and have a fresh turbo for the same price? So, am I to understand that lateral shaft play means that the turbo CAN NOT be rebuilt (or at least not with the rebuild kit, therefore its too expensive), or is it that people just find it easier to get a "new" turbo instead of rebuilding the old one?

Thanx

The lateral shaft play should be taken care of with a rebuild kit.

New bearings, compressor seal, and turbine c-clip should take care of the lateral shaft play.

I don't see why lateral shaft play would indicate a turbo that is not rebuildable.
