True nough, people use longer gearing to get traction and stay in boost longer, BUT if you could get traction with the closer ratio tranny then you would be alot quicker.

The only need for super long DX tranny or LS tranny gears would be for cars making 350+HP Hondas. You would have so much power that your long gears would feel short because you have so much power for the longer gears to benefit you.

Just practice on your launch, stiffen your suspension, and get good sticky tires and you will appreciate the close ratio tranny.

Your tires can effect your gearing by quite a bit too. When I go racing with my brother ( modded Z-28 ) he loves to see imports with 17'' rims, its like a garentee that the import is toast in 1/8, and it would take one hell on a honda to run alomst any newer z-28 down.

Low profile tires = bing bing and spin
smaller rim and bigger tire = more traction and a lot less bing bing.

Ya thats pretty true about the 17's, i am going to be running 17's and full interior. When i go to the track i will borrow some slicks.

how about a JDM B16a LSD Tranny. They are real real short.

1-4th gears close (si tranny)

5th gear cruising (like hf 5th)

the new z28s run like 14 flat. but the ls1 engine responds very well to bolts ons... headers/exhaust/intake. they also respond well to nitrious

Longer gears create a load which your turbo will response to better.

That is just MY opinion.

On d series motors DX trannys seem to get better timeslips. But everybody says Si trannys are better. Go figure?

This isnt even a valid argument anymore...its not about turbo, its about staying in the most 'usable' part of your power band...which on a high HP (read large A/R, no spoolin till 5k, sub 2ltr hamster) 4cyl is very narrow. Traction not considered shorter gears are better period. A GSR or S1/J1 equiped car will ET faster than a LS tranny.

However, after driving with an LS for awhile, Its hard not to like the longer cruising friendly gears, plus its a blast to to rip 3rd to a 100ish :)
Almost worth giving up those few extra .10's in the 1/4.

MrDrPep nailed it though; For a daily-driver, a hyrbid SI 1-4, HF5th or S1/J1 1-4/ LS 5th would be perfect.

'staying longer in boost' sounds good rolling off your tongue, but thats about it.

I have a jdm b16 in 95 ex,the gears are so short and I redlined very fast, but not boosted yet a lot of people say its because of the msd ignition system but I don't know if I am going to like it that way after turbo, what would be a good tranny to use on a b16 other than the original,for dail driving?
